West Newbury Garden Club Annual Plant Sale
The West Newbury Garden Club will host its annual plant sale on Saturday morning, May 16,
from 8:30 to 11:30 on the West Newbury Training Ground which is located across from the GAR
Memorial Library and the Town Hall, on Route 113. The eighty members of the West Newbury
Club supply many of the plants offered, freshly dug from their own gardens; and, that means
gardeners will find plants that are already acclimated to local conditions. The Club also
supplements its members’ donations with native plants and excellent pollinators, purchased to
give buyers more choice and to encourage them to think about helping birds and insects. West
Newbury’s Grant Family Farm will bring vegetable starter plants for garden-to-table plots, herbs,
and dahlias.
In recent years, more than 1,000 plants have been for sale. Interested buyers can find plants
suitable for full sun or shade, rich soil or more difficult soil. Ground covers provide the much-
appreciated color green for those hard-to-grow-grass spots in a yard. Currently, Club members
are digging, potting, and organizing the many donations received. The Club also provides
digging services for gardeners who have plants to donate but may be unable to divide and pot
the offerings themselves.
Gardeners will find many favorites from which to choose. Plants are still being collected for this
year’s sale, but offerings in past have included lilies, irises, Hosta of varying sizes and colors,
coreopsis, sedums, Solomon’s seal, astilbe and many more. Native plants this year include
tulip trees, dogwood, spicebush, honeysuckle, blueberry, and serviceberry.
The proceeds of the plant sale support the West Newbury Garden Club’s scholarships, This
year, the Club is offering two $4,000 scholarships to either graduating seniors or college
students who reside in the Pentucket School District and who will study a field related to the
environment. Come to the Training Field on May 16 and enhance your own garden while you
simultaneously support the education of local students who are the next generation of
environmental protectors.
