This Week’s Morning Show Features:
Children’s Book Author Elisa Boxer on
“Under the Rubble: the Hidden Letters of the
Warsaw Ghetto
This week it’s my pleasure to speak with Elisa Boxer, the award-winning author of more than a dozen nonfiction children’s books, several of which deal with Holocaust history and the resistance, including her new book, Under the Rubble: the Hidden Letters of the Warsaw Ghetto.
Elisa will read and discuss Under the Rubble at an event to be held at Congregation Ahavas Achim, 53 ½ Washington Street in Newburyport, on April 12th from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Commemorating Yom Hashoah, a day dedicated to remembering and honoring victims of the Holocaust, the event is titled Keeping Their Stories Alive: an Afternoon of Reading, Reflecting, and Remembering.
Elisa will review the history of the Warsaw Ghetto and explain how and why a number of Jews imprisoned in the ghetto decided they would secretly write about their experiences, even though it was dangerous to do so. Determined that the crimes committed against them by the Nazis would not disappear, they buried the archives in metal boxes and milk cans in three sites around the city. Two of the sites were discovered in the post-war rubble of Warsaw. One has yet to be found. Elisa will discuss what drew her to write about this chapter of Holocaust history, and how she narrates the story in a way appropriate for children.
