Rev. War’s Battle of Chelsea Creek with Anthony Guerriero

To mark this year’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this week I spoke with American historian Anthony Guerriero about the Battle of Chelsea Creek, the first naval engagement of the Revolutionary War.

Anthony is a favorite and returning guest, having visited the show before to talk about topics ranging from Thomas Jefferson, Ted Williams, and the WWI Christmas Truce.

This week he talked about the strategic importance of the location of the Battle, which took place along Chelsea Creek on May 27 and 28, 1775, amid the salt marshes and mudflats surrounding Noodles Island and Hog Island in Boston harbor, near what are now the towns of Chelsea and Revere.

After the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, British forces had been driven back and hemmed in on what was then the small peninsula that constituted Boston. Anthony explained why the aim of the Battle of Chelsea Creek then became to cut off British access to livestock and hay from the northern islands in Boston Harbor.

Anthony discussed why the Battle was considered a great success, both in terms of its military goals and in bolstering the morale not only of the rebel militias but also the colonial communities, thereby increasing their confidence in the likely success of the Revolutionary War.
