City of Newburyport Awarded $1.49 Million Seaport Economic Council Grant for Boardwalk Rehabilitation

Newburyport, MA — The City of Newburyport has been awarded $1,492,500 through the Commonwealth’s Seaport Economic Council (SEC) FY26 Grant Program to support the Newburyport Boardwalk Rehabilitation Project, a major investment in the City’s waterfront infrastructure, public access, and coastal resilience.

The grant was approved by the Seaport Economic Council following its reconstitution by Governor Maura Healey, whose administration continues to prioritize coastal communities, working waterfronts, and climate-resilient infrastructure across Massachusetts.

“This is an incredibly important investment in one of Newburyport’s most iconic and heavily used public assets,” said Mayor Sean Reardon. “Our boardwalk is central to our waterfront economy, tourism, and quality of life. This funding allows us to move forward with critical rehabilitation work that will ensure the boardwalk remains safe, accessible, and resilient for generations to come.”

The Boardwalk Rehabilitation Project will address aging infrastructure, improve safety and accessibility, and strengthen the boardwalk’s ability to withstand coastal flooding and storm impacts. The project supports Newburyport’s broader waterfront strategy, which balances economic vitality, public access, and long-term climate adaptation.

Newburyport was one of 23 coastal communities across the Commonwealth selected for FY26 SEC funding. In total, the program awarded millions of dollars to projects that strengthen ports, harbors, marinas, and waterfront infrastructure while supporting local economies and maritime industries.

“The Seaport Economic Council Grant Program is a critical partner for coastal cities like Newburyport,” Mayor Reardon added. “We are grateful to Governor Healey, Lieutenant Governor Driscoll, the Executive Office of Economic Development, and the Seaport Economic Council for recognizing the importance of this project and investing in our waterfront.”

Construction timelines and next steps for the Boardwalk Rehabilitation Project will be announced as final design and permitting milestones are completed.
