This Week’s Morning Show Features:
Winter Fanfare with the Newburyport Choral Society’s Dr. Minji Kim and Penny Lazarus
Dr. Minji Kim, Music Director of the Newburyport Choral Society, and Penny Lazarus, Membership Director and Alto Section Leader, will visit this week to discuss the upcoming Winter Fanfare: Songs of Joy and Hope concert to be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, December 12th at 7:30 PM and Sunday, December 14th at 3 PM.
Minji and Penny will talk about concert works and composers, including Andre Thomas’s “African Noel,” Cecelia McDowell’s “A Winter’s Night — a medley of familiar carols set in novel harmonies — and Randol Alan Bass’s “Gloria.”
They’ll also talk about works that reflect the varied moods of the season, ranging from sorrow to joy and hope, such as Israeli composer Nurit Hirsch’s “Bashana Haba’ah” and Glenn Rudolph’s “The Dream Isaiah Saw,” dedicated to those who perished in the attacks of 9/11.
Minji has established a reputation as a gifted choral programmer, and I’m eager to ask her about the process she uses to create musically compelling and emotionally engaging programs that singers enjoy performing and audiences love to hear. She and and Penny will also talk about music’s expressive and healing impacts and why holiday concerts such as Winter Fanfare are enduringly beloved and needed.
