This Week’s Morning Show Features:
The Abolitionism of John Greenleaf Whittier
If you ever took an American Literature course, you’re probably familiar with John Greenleaf Whittier’s most famous post-Civil War poem “Snowbound.” But you may not have known about his activism as an abolitionist. On this week’s show, Erika McAvoy, Executive Director of Amesbury’s John Greenleaf Whittier Home and Museum — a National Historic Landmark– and Board President, Anne Ferguson will fill that gap.
I’ll be speaking with Erica and Anne about the legacy of Whittier’s abolitionism. They’ll discuss the role that Whitter’s family background and Quaker faith played in laying the groundwork for his activism, which he engaged in at a time when outspoken abolitionism was often dangerous.
They will also talk about the example and inspiration his courage and integrity in championing freedom and justice can provide during our own troubled times.
