This Week’s Morning Show Features:

Prof. Sheldon Solomon on the Psychodynamics of Fascism

This week I have the honor of talking with Sheldon Solomon, Professor of Psychology at Skidmore College, about the critical topic of the psychodynamic underpinnings of fascism. What characterstic strategies do fascist leaders employ to accumulate power? Who is vulnerable to fascism’s manipulative distortions of reality and under what circumstances?
Sheldon has received numerous honors, including being named an American Psychological Society Fellow, and receiving an American Psychological Association Presidential Citation (2007).
I will talk with Sheldon about the reasons why fascist leaders typically promote an US vs THEM mindset which targets and dehumanizes certain groups as evil, criminal, and dangerous.
Sheldon will discuss how fascist leaders manipulate shared realities via the spread of disinformation, and will outline what social and economic conditions make people vulnerable to believing fascist leaders’ promises and propaganda.
On the hopeful side, Sheldon will also talk about the critical role that education — especially civics education — can play in preserving democracy.
