This week I’m honored to welcome Professor Barry Schrage, who leads the Initiative for Jewish Identity at Brandeis University’s Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies, as well as Rabbi Alex Matthews of Newburyport’s Congregation Ahavas Achim (CAA).
Barry and Alex will preview timely and important topics they will explore during an upcoming event at CAA, “Reflections on American Jewry Today,” on Sunday, August 17th.
I’ll talk with them about the challenge of building a unifying Jewish identity in the face of diverse points of view amidst the Jewish community, Israel-America relations and antisemitism, and other issues of continued concern among Jews and the broader community.
Barry will explain what he views as the “transformational” potential of the current turbulent and divisive era in Israel and among American Jews, with crisis itself creating opportunities for renewing shared meaning and purpose built upon “our sense of mutual responsibility…and the bonds of love that tie us together.”
The August 17th CAA event, which includes a light supper, will take place at 5:30 P.M. at 53 ½ Washington Street and is free and open to the public, but advance registration is requested.
