This Week’s “Morning Show” Features:
PEM American Art Curator Jeffrey Richmond-Moll
This week I get to do one of my favorite kinds of interviews: learn from a curator. Along with reference librarians, I’m convinced they’re the smartest people in the world.
I’m speaking with Jeffrey Richmond-Moll, PhD, the George Putnam Curator of American Art at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), about the exhibition, Making History: 200 Years of American Art, on display now through September 21st.
Co-organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), the exhibition surveys two centuries of American painting and sculpture through 85 American artworks, including such well known artists as Gilbert Stuart, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt and Georgia O’Keefe, as well as lesser known artists.
Jeff will discuss artworks that illustrate a theme of the exhibit, that making art makes – and sometimes remakes – history.
He’ll also talk about the evolution of portraiture, with artists in the 1700s and 1800s portraying individuals of power and wealth, while artists later in the 1800s and 1900s portrayed a broader swath of Americans, a choice shaped in part by the admission of women and African Americans into fine arts academies such as PAFA.
Jeff will also offer his own answer to the exhibition’s overarching question: what makes an artist or a work of art distinctively American?
