Mayor Reardon Announces Formation of Senior Affordability Task Force

Newburyport, MA — Mayor Sean Reardon today announced the formation of the Senior Affordability Task Force, a new initiative aimed at identifying and advancing policies to support Newburyport’s older residents who are facing increasing financial pressures due to the rising cost of living and fixed incomes.

Developed in close collaboration with the Newburyport Council on Aging (COA), the Task Force will include representatives from the Assessor’s Office, Department of Public Services (DPS), Health Department, COA staff and board members, and the Friends of the Council on Aging.

“As a community, we want to ensure that all residents—especially our seniors—can continue to live comfortably and with dignity in Newburyport,” said Mayor Reardon. “The cost of living is a growing concern for many, and it’s placing a real burden on our older neighbors. This Task Force will help us find practical solutions to ease that burden and identify new resources to support seniors.”

The Task Force will explore potential policy recommendations in areas such as tax relief, discounts on water and sewer bills, and expanded access to healthcare-related support services. It will meet periodically over the next six months and engage with city staff, community stakeholders, and elected officials.

The Senior Affordability Task Force will focus on three key goals:

Review existing municipal policies and analyze economic trends affecting senior affordability in Newburyport.
Identify administrative barriers and service gaps that limit effective support for older residents.
Develop actionable recommendations to enhance city programs and services that help alleviate financial stress for seniors.
Any proposed policy changes would be brought to the City Council for consideration. The Task Force will work to ensure recommendations are practical, impactful, and able to be implemented effectively by city departments.

“Our city thrives when we come together to support one another—especially those facing difficult circumstances,” Mayor Reardon added. “I’m grateful to the members of this Task Force for stepping up to help improve the lives of Newburyport’s seniors and for their continued service to our community.”

The Task Force is expected to begin its work in late July 2025.
