Cyd Raschke Discusses “Home of the Spirit Animals”

Cynthia “Cyd” Raschke, whose community service in Newburyport includes being a co-founder of the Newburyport Black History Initiative, will visit this week to discuss her recently published novel, “Home of the Spirit Animals.”
Set during the Age of Exploration, the novel depicts “a Native American girl on the run in Texas who binds her fate with a young sailor of Moorish descent shipwrecked alongside five beautiful Spanish horses.”

I will interview Cyd about the sources of her inspiration for the novel, including her lifelong love for horses, her Native American heritage, and wanting to set the historical record straight that Equus first evolved in North America.

Cyd will also tell us how she learned to describe what it would be like to sail on a 15th-century Spanish ship when the Custom House Maritime Museum brought the recreated Spanish tall ship “El Galeon” to Newburyport from Spain in 2016, enabling her to interview members of the crew.
For more information on Raschke and “Home of the Spirit Animals,” visit www.firstfoal.com.

Due to Newburyport Community Media’s Summer Camp offerings in July, the “Morning Show” will air reruns for the rest of July. For information about NCM’s Youth Programs, visit https://ncmhub.org/learn/youth-programs/
