Celebrate Expansion of Feeding Program during Hunger Awareness Month
Community Café Opening and Ribbon Cutting at The Salvation of Newburyport on June 4
Newburyport, Mass. (June 2, 2025) — The Salvation Army of Newburyport, a local non-profit organization, is proud to announce the opening of its new Community Café during Hunger Awareness Month. The newly renovated café space, located within The Salvation Army on Water Street in Newburyport, offers a welcoming and inclusive space, dedicated to serving free meals to the community at no charge. This renovation project reflects a broader community commitment to supporting the needs of all neighbors, with local financial consulting firm Darling Consulting Group being a lead contributor alongside Groveland resident Jeanne Milaschewski. At age 95, Milaschewski spent 50 hours hand-sewing new curtains for the new café with her sewing circle. Milaschewski has a strong connection to The Salvation Army through her late husband who was helped by the non-profit when he served during World War II. The Salvation Army is also celebrating National Donut Day this week on June 6, a tradition that the non-profit began during World War I to boost morale and offer sweet treats to the front line soldiers like Milaschewski’s husband.
Why: In Massachusetts, one in three adults is reported to be food insecure. Food insecurity often goes unnoticed in many communities, but thanks to the community’s support The Salvation Army is able to ensure that a growing number of our neighbors — including local children, seniors, and families — have a meal on the table.
As one of the largest non-profit social service providers in the United States, The Salvation Army is committed to serving every zip code in the nation. By providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, emotional and spiritual care, plus clothing and shelter for people in need, The Salvation Army is doing the most good to help all of our neighbors during their greatest times of need.
