Newburyport Sustainability Tour: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the City’s Green Future
NEWBURYPORT, MA – The City of Newburyport is pleased to announce its upcoming Sustainability Tour, a unique 90-minute guided bus excursion showcasing some of the city’s most innovative and forward-thinking sustainable initiatives. The tour will take place as part of the Greater Newburyport Green Expo on Sunday, May 18, 2025, departing at 2:00 PM from the Bresnahan School at 32 North Atkinson Street.
Led by Molly Ettenborough, Newburyport’s Recycling & Sustainability Manager, the tour will provide participants with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at four key sustainable sites that demonstrate the city’s commitment to environmental responsibility and climate resilience:
Hillside Sustainable Village: Explore this forward-thinking neighborhood development featuring energy-efficient homes with solar panels, triple pane windows, LEED certified buildings, and innovative water conservation systems.
Newburyport Sewer Treatment Plant: Witness cutting-edge technologies used to process wastewater, ensuring that nothing harmful is released into the environment while protecting the Merrimack River for future generations.
Water Treatment Process Facility: Discover how the city treats and purifies its water, learning about system needs for future use and water sourcing.
Net Zero Cutter Fire Station: Visit the city’s newest addition—a fire station designed to be energy neutral with green building techniques including solar panels, high-performance insulation, and smart energy management systems.
“This tour showcases how Newburyport is undertaking environmental responsibility and sustainable urban development,” said Molly Ettenborough, Recycling & Sustainability Manager. “Participants will not only see our top sustainable projects but will also walk away with practical knowledge on how these concepts can be implemented in their own homes or communities.”
The tour can accommodate up to 45 people and participants are encouraged to bring comfortable walking shoes and a reusable water bottle. Pre-registration is available through the Green Expo’s Eventbrite page https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2025-greater-newburyport-green-expo-tickets-1133939446409, though day-of registration will be accepted if space permits.
