The City of Newburyport Introduces New Compact Trash Truck and Receptacles to Improve Cleanliness and Worker Safety

Newburyport, MA – The City of Newburyport is proud to announce the deployment of a new compact trash collection truck and updated waterfront trash receptacles, part of an ongoing effort to improve public spaces and protect city workers.

This smaller, more agile trash truck is specifically designed to navigate tighter spaces and more efficiently service high-traffic pedestrian areas—particularly along the city’s popular and picturesque waterfront and boardwalk. More importantly, it will play a key role in reducing labor-related injuries among Department of Public Services (DPS) staff.

“Traditional trash collection methods in dense pedestrian areas often require significant manual handling, which puts our employees at risk for back, shoulder and other injuries,” said Mayor Sean Reardon. “This new truck will help us work smarter, while keeping Newburyport clean and beautiful.”

In addition to worker safety, the new trash system will address a common but unpleasant issue: the trail of “trash juice” that often leaks from overfilled or punctured trash bags. The capabilities of the truck and ability to maneuver closer to the trash receptacles will reduce the exposure to leaks during the collection process making for cleaner sidewalks and downtown area.

Also unveiled recently, are a series of newly installed trash receptacles along the downtown waterfront just off the boardwalk. These durable, high-capacity bins are designed to handle increased foot traffic and reduce overflow, especially during the busy summer season. Their sleek design complements the aesthetic of Newburyport’s historic waterfront while delivering modern functionality.

“This is a win-win for our community,” said DPS Director Wayne Amaral. “We’re keeping the city cleaner, improving safety for our employees, and enhancing the overall visitor experience.”

The new truck is on the street and receptacles are now being implanted. Residents and visitors are encouraged to take note of the changes and help keep Newburyport clean by using the newly installed receptacles.
