This Week on the “Morning Show”:
NHS’s Bring Change 2 Mind Club

This week I’ll be speaking with Cassidy Balcome, President of Newburyport High School’s Bring Change 2 Mind Club (BC2M), and Vice President Kelsey Simons, who will be accompanied by Club Counselor Jaime Calisi. BC2M is a national nonprofit with school-based, student-led chapters that aims to reduce stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness, and to provide young people with support and resources.
Balcome and Simons will discuss the projects and events BC2M has initiated at the high school, such as sponsoring visits from therapy dogs to reduce students’ stress during exams. A priority for BC2M is to reduce the use of stigmatizing language regarding mental illness, which can create harmful and inaccurate stereotypes, thereby creating barriers to talking about mental health concerns and reaching out for help. Balcome, Simons, and Calisi will give examples of ways to talk about mental illness that foster understanding, compassion and support.
