Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) with Dolores Person and Rachel Person
This week I talked about an intriguing new development in Newburyport’s housing scene. Dolores Person and Rachel Person of the Person + Person Group and Raveis Real Estate visited the show to discuss Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).
The Persons described changes in Newburyport’s zoning ordinances that allow owners of single family zoned houses to build ADUs, or small, independent living spaces on the same property.
ADU’s are viewed as a way to address the crisis in affordable housing, as well as an opportunity for home owners to generate income or to accommodate family members.
The Persons explained guidelines for a unit’s size, rental options, and requirements regarding parking.
They also described the free workshop and panel discussion on ADUs that they will host at the Senior Center at 6 p.m. on March 13th . As Dolores Person has said, “Many people are interested in creating ADUs, but don’t know where to begin.” The workshop aims “to help people navigate the process.”
