“The Morning Show” featured “Slide” Composer/Performer Caren Lyn Manuel Tackett
January 30, 2025This Week on “The Morning Show”:
“Slide” Composer/Performer
Caren Lyn Manuel Tackett
Broadway performer, writer and composer Caren Lyn Manuel Tackett visited the show this week to discuss “Slide; a Quest for Mental Health,” which she wrote and will perform at the Firehouse Center for the Arts on February 7th and 8th at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 9th at 2 p.m.
“Slide’s” director, Colin Gregory will accompany Tackett, along with Kate McSwain of American Ice Theatre, and Tackett’s daughter, Ravyn Sioux, who will perform in the show.
Caren grew up in Boxford and performed in shows at the Newburyport skating rink, where her father was an announcer. She began her musical theater career on Broadway and on world tours in 1995 with the role of Eponine in “Les Miserables,” and went on to perform roles in “Rent,” “High Fidelity,” “Hair,” “Brooklyn,” “Evita” and “Grease,” among others. But Caren says her “primary passion” has always been “creating and sharing my own music and productions.”
Caren discussed why she chose in “Slide” to explore a “subject that is often not part of the cultural conversation; the misdiagnosis and mistreatment of those diagnosed with mental illness in our society.” She described how “Slide” presents a fictionalized account of her own quest for mental health.
“Slide” is billed as a “staged concert experience” incorporating multiple arts including music, painting, dance, theater, and ice skating. Caren explained how she utilizes these different art forms in the performance.
