This Week on “The Morning Show”:

Author of “Dear Miss Perkins,”
Rebecca Brenner Graham

I’m a great admirer of Frances Perkins, who appears to me to have embodied everything a human being should aspire to be. So I’m thrilled this week to speak with historian Rebecca Brenner Graham about her forthcoming (on January 21st) book, Dear Miss Perkins: A Story of Frances Perkins’s Efforts to Aid Refugees from Nazi Germany (Kensington, 2025).
A postdoctoral research associate at Brown University, Rebecca holds a PhD in history and MA in public history from American University. She will discuss Perkins’s pioneering accomplishments as the first female cabinet secretary and an architect of the New Deal as Labor Secretary under FDR. But she will primarily focus on the subject of her new book, Perkins’s little known efforts to save Jewish refugees from the Nazi regime.

At the time, the Immigration and Naturalization Service was part of the Department of Labor, so Perkins held the power to intervene on behalf of Jewish refugees. Rebecca read through thousands of letters at the National Archives addressed to “Dear Miss Perkins,” pleading for her help in escaping Nazi rule.

Rebecca will also discuss the significance of Perkins’s family homestead, located in Newcastle, Maine, being declared a National Monument by President Biden in December of last year.
