This Week on “The Morning Show” Media Education Lab with Renee Hobbs, Yonty Friesem, and Kyra Brissette
December 11, 2024This Week on “The Morning Show”
Media Education Lab with Renee Hobbs, Yonty Friesem, and
Kyra Brissette
I learned about the work of Media Education Lab (MEL) when preparing for my conversation a few weeks ago with educator Susan Harvey about her work on genocide education. She sent me a FAQ document on the state mandate requiring genocide education for middle schoolers through high school students that mentioned MEL’s work helping students learn to decode propaganda and advertising. In an age of rampant disinformation, such work seems urgently needed, so I immediately contacted MEL to invite them on the show.
They said Yes right away, I’m happy to report! So this week I’m talking with Dr. Renee Hobbs, Founder of Media Education Lab (MEL) and Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Yonty Friesem, Executive Director of MEL and Associate Professor at the School of Communication and Culture at Columbia College Chicago, and Kyra Brisette, Chief Operating Officer and Director of Development for Media Literacy Now.
I will talk with Renee, Yonty, and Kyra about the Media Education Lab’s mission of advancing media literacy education by helping students to develop what they call “the four C’s: communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.” They will describe some of the multimedia resources they’ve developed to help parents, educators, and others integrate media literacy education into their work with learners of all ages.
MEL’s scope is international, and includes educational projects in Massachusetts, which Kyra will describe, including the Massachusetts Media Literacy Survey, which is intended for teachers and administrators in all Massachusetts school districts and will be open until 12/20/24.
