This Week on the “Morning Show”
Genocide Education with Susan Harvey

Historian, retired high school history teacher, and curriculum consultant on genocide education Susan Harvey will visit the show this week. Susan is a welcome and return guest to the show, having been on in the past to talk about her research into Newburyport’s involvement in the “Triangle Trade,” and her exploration of her own family’s involvement in the slave/sugar cane/rum connections.

This visit, Susan and I will talk about the curriculum development she’s been working on since she retired from teaching high school history in Littleton. She’ll talk about the act signed into law by Governor Baker in December 2021, mandating that Massachusetts school districts provide instruction about the history of genocide to middle and high school students, describing the purpose of the law and how it defines genocide.

Susan will also talk about how the curriculum on genocide differs in objectives and content for middle schoolers and high school students. She will speak about some of the diaries, memoirs, literature and historical accounts used in different grades, and will also discuss students’ responses to these lessons, both their own reports and Susan’s observations.

Historically, genocides develop in recognizable stages, which Susan will explain, offering examples of how later atrocities grow from early roots in bigotry, dehumanizing rhetoric, and hatred. She will discuss how knowledge of these predictable patterns provides us with a powerful tool to prevent a descent into violence.
