The Election of 1800 with Anthony Guerriero
An extremely contentious and hyper-partisan Presidential election. Are we talking about 2024? Try 1800! Historian Anthony Guerriero, a frequent and favorite guest with a gift for making history come alive, will put our current Presidential election into the historical perspective of the tumultuous and extremely partisan fourth Presidential election of the new republic in 1800.
Anthony will describe the contest between the Federalist incumbent, John Adams, who had narrowly defeated Thomas Jefferson in the 1796 election, and the Democratic-Republican Party candidate, Vice President Thomas Jefferson. Because of a constitutional quirk relating to the electoral college, the election was ultimately decided by the House of Representatives which broke a tied vote by electing Jefferson.
This was the first presidential election in American history to be a rematch. It was also the first election in American history where an incumbent president did not win re-election.
Anthony will talk about lessons learned from this election, and how it can help us understand current electoral politics.
