Love Stories from History with Author and
Historian Leslie Landrigan
Author and historian Leslie Landrigan returned to the show this week to discuss the newly published book she wrote with her husband Dan, “Love Stories from History: The Lives and Loves of Puritans, Poets, Pioneers, Peers, Soldiers, a President and a Magician.”
Leslie is always fun to talk to. On one earlier visit, she spoke about Newburyport’s fascinating eccentric, the faux royal “Lord” Timothy Dexter. On a return visit, she shared stories of the resort town excesses and scandals of the ultra wealthy in her earlier and perfectly titled book, “Bar Harbor Babylon.”
Her newest book is based on research the Landrigans conducted for their New England Historical Society website. “Love Stories” presents the lives and loves of legendary Americans spanning 350 years, from Puritan poet Anne Bradstreet to Mark Twain to baseball great Jackie Robinson.
I focused with Leslie on two operatic love stories, that of Continental Army hero, Major Alexander Scammel, who couldn’t quit proposing to a woman who repeatedly refused him (six times!), and “Scarlet Letter” author Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was caught up in a triangular relationships with two of Salem’s three famous and accomplished Peabody sisters.
