This Week on “The Morning Show:
End-of-Life Doula Michele Bograd, Ph.D.
Ever heard of an “End-of-Life Doula”? Neither had I until I recently saw Psychologist Michele Bograd, PhD, present a virtual library presentation on the topic. Although most of us associate doulas with the transition of birth, dying and death are also transitions which call for comfort, support, guidance, and education.
Happily, Michele agreed to an interview on this week’s “Morning Show” to discuss her impactful and much needed work with individuals and families as an end-of-life doula.
Michele, who has more than 40 years of experience as a psychotherapist, will describe the path that led her to what she calls a “new chapter of adventure, growth, and service” as an end-of-life doula.
We’ll about the role that doulas play at the end of life, and how their mission differs from that of hospice providers. She will tell stories to illustrate the kind of help asked for by individuals and families preparing for death.
Michele will also discuss some of the historical and cultural forces — including the spread of embalming during the Civil War, which helped to launch the funeral industry — that have led contemporary American culture in some ways to be “death aversive,” and to the commercialization and medicalization of death and dying, in contrast to the family focused rituals and practices of the past.
