This Week’s Morning Show Features
Alternative to Violence Project with
Kathy Desilets
This week I’ll talk with Kathy Desilets, a Newburyport resident and a volunteer with the remarkable and impactful nonprofit Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), which was founded in 1975 at Green Haven Prison in New York by prisoners and Quaker peacemakers collaborating to deescalate conflicts among youth gangs and teenagers at risk. AVP has been operating in Massachusetts since 1988. Staffed mostly by volunteers, today AVP provides experiential workshops internationally in prisons and communities to enable participants to deal with potentially violent situations in peaceful and creative ways.
Kathy will describe the workshops she has been leading at County Corrections facilities in Middleton and Lawrence for the past 8 years, with a focus on helping participants “bring positivity, listening, and hope to the conflicts they face in life.”
