Negro Election Day with Doreen Wade
Never heard of Negro Election Day? Neither had I until a couple of years ago. Did you know it’s an official Massachusetts state holiday? July 20th of this year will be the second year it’s being celebrated as a state holiday, with a parade and festivities to be held, as they traditionally have been, at Salem Willows Park.
I invite you to join me in learning about this fascinating, longstanding (since 1741, with recent archival evidence that it actually began in 1693!) tradition from Doreen Wade, Founder and President of Salem United, a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting the history of Negro Election Day.
Doreen and I will talk about the history of Negro Election Day, during which enslaved African Americans elected a leader, referred to as governor or king, to represent their community, thereby establishing a democratic system long before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
We will discuss the importance of expanding knowledge of, respect for, celebration of, and teaching about this extraordinary and inspiring chapter of American history.
