This Week’s Morning Show Features
Salvation Army Captain Jessica Berkhoudt and Board Chair David Lanphear

Join me this week to learn about the fascinating history and expansive good works of the Salvation Army with Captain Jessica Berkhoudt and Board Chair David Lanphear.

I will talk with Jessica and David about the origins of the Salvation Army as an “army of volunteers” organized to help the poor in East London in 1865, and how it grew over time into an international movement that currently serves 130 nations and assists 30 million people annually in the U.S. alone, always doing so “without discrimination.”

Jessica and David will discuss the Christian mission and values that motivate the organization’s extensive charitable endeavors, and the range of needs it addresses, including hunger, addiction, LGBTQ support, and emergency disaster support, among many others. They will also talk about how and why the organization uses military ranks and uniforms as hallmarks of leadership.

David and Jessica will also describe the Salvation Army’s upcoming “Summer Sailebration,” a sunset cruise aboard the “Captain’s Lady” that will depart from Newburyport’s Waterfront Boardwalk at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 29th, and will explain how the proceeds will be used to fund essential human services in our community.
