“Colors Like Me: Family Conversations” Helps Parents Talk About Race with their Children
Third Anti-Racism Series Event Features Hands-On Approach Led by The YWCA of Greater Newburyport’s Racial Justice Team

Newburyport, MA, April 6, 2024 – The PEG Center for Art & Activism, the YWCA of Greater Newburyport, and Eddie Carson, Dean of Multicultural Education at The Governor’s Academy, are presenting the third session of an anti-racism series on Thursday, April 18 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. at the PEG Center for Art & Activism at 3 Harris Street in Newburyport. “Colors Like Me: Family Conversations” will provide guided art activities, conversation, and nonjudgmental ways to engage with children on a complex topic. Space is limited; please pre-register online at www.thepegcenter.org. Suggested donation is $10 per person or $10 per family.

Led by Amanda Bradbury, YWCA Director of Youth Services, and Anne Upton, YWCA Inclusion Specialist, the event highlights their ongoing curriculum to be brave, informed and thoughtful about race. As part of this effort, the “Colors Like Me Project” artwork done by the YWCA’s after-care program at the Bresnahan Elementary School will be on display. Free pizza and cookies will be served.

“Have you ever wondered how to talk to your children about race? Have you wondered how young is too young to start these conversations? This is a great opportunity to start a dialogue that will nurture the rising generation and make our multiracial democracy flourish,” said Paula Estey, Executive Director of the PEG Center.

“The event is happening during the school vacation week. Come alone or bring your children or grandchildren with you. Instead of our usual hour-long lecture, we’ve arranged the Center with different areas to make it welcoming for families, which is also helpful for younger children’s attention spans,” she added.

The Colors Like Me art display will be up through mid-May, along with colorful, multimedia portraits by Brockton, MA-based artist Youveline Joseph.

The final event in this anti-racism series will be “Committing to Change: Becoming Anti-Racist.” It will be held on Thursday, May 16 from 6-7:30 p.m. at The Francis T. Bresnahan School, 333 High Street in Newburyport. The series will end with actionable items and commitments from local leaders, citizens and friends to literally begin to change the face and forecast of the community.
