How Newburyport High School’s Investment Club Won the Stock Market Game
This week I’ll welcome Newburyport High School Investment Club club advisor and physics teacher Sean McCarthy and club officers Matt McDougal, Matt Hurley, and Stephen D’Ambrosio. I was impressed to learn that the club recently took first place statewide in the high school division — competing against 900 other schools — in the Stock Market Game of the Securities, Industry, and Financial Markets Association Foundation.
The NHS club, sponsored by the Newburyport Education Foundation, took the win after only three years in operation.
I plan to talk with Sean and the students about the workings of the Stock Market Game; why the club decided to invest in Bitcoin (and can they explain to me exactly WHAT IS BITCOIN? And how is it “mined”?); what they enjoy about and how they benefit from participating in the club; why they think it’s important to learn about financial markets, especially at a young age; and the club’s plans to defend its title during the next round of the Stock Market Game.
