This Week’s “Morning Show” Features:
Ghlee Woodworth on the
“Once Known” Marker Project
This week, I have the pleasure of talking with returning guest and always fascinating historian and author Ghlee Woodworth about the Old Hill Burying Ground “Once Known” Marker Project. Ghlee is the author of “Tiptoe Through the Tombstones: Oak Hill Cemetery” and the two-volume set “Newburyport Clipper Heritage Trail.” She’ll discuss the research, public education, and tours she provides on Early Black History in Newburyport.
Ghlee will explain how she used earth penetrating radar within the African American section of Old Hill Burying Ground to discover 18 unmarked burial sites. She’ll discuss why and how she decided to launch the “Once Known” Marker Project to place granite stones inscribed with “Once Known” at each of the 18 sites. We will also discuss why researching and teaching about our Early Black Community Members’ history and contributions matters, giving a more accurate picture of Newburyport’s past and thereby enriching our understanding of the present.
