This Week’s “Morning Show” Features: Port Gingerbread Festival
Mary Dissette and Myra Suraci will visit the show this week to talk about plans for the inaugural Port Gingerbread Festival, a collaboration with Greater Newburyport Village as presenting sponsor.
The Festival is a contest and public exhibition of gingerbread creations — works of art and works of heart — made by people of all ages throughout the community. From “traditional” gingerbread houses to skyscrapers, race cars, or castles, all feats of imagination are welcomed.
As Mary says, the Festival is both a “FUN-raiser and a FUND-raiser,” a celebration of creativity and community, supported by sponsorships and donations. Net proceeds will benefit the meal program Among Friends, a ministry of St. Paul’s Church, whose volunteers cook and serve 100+ meals three times a week.
Everyone can take part in the Festival, including children, families, teens, adults, youth groups, civic and community organizations, and businesses. Entering the contest is free, as is admission to the exhibition.
Ways to participate include creating a gingerbread piece; visiting or volunteering at the exhibition (“Gingerbread artists love an audience,” Mary says); or sponsoring the Festival with a financial contribution.
Community non-profit organizations are supporting this new holiday venture by getting the word out to their audiences. These include the Anna Jaques Hospital Aid Association, Newburyport Youth Services, Tinkerhaus and the YWCA, among numerous others. Funding is led by a grant from the Institution for Savings, with contributions from many local business sponsors and individuals.
The Exhibition will be held from Friday, December 8th – Sunday, December 10th at Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb Street. For information on the Festival and how to enter the contest or volunteer at the event, visit www.portgingerbreadfestival.org.
