This Week’s “Morning Show” Featured: Preventing Targeted Violence with Brette Steele
October 13, 2023This Week’s “Morning Show” Features: Preventing Targeted Violence with Brette Steele
Brette Steele, Senior Director for Preventing Targeted Violence at the McCain Institute for International Leadership, visited the show this week and discussed the “SCREEN Hate” campaign, the first nationwide campaign to provide information directly to parents and caregivers to prevent acts of hate-based violence perpetrated by teens and young adults.
Noting that teens’ and young adults’ screen time has soared over the last few years, Brette points out that millions of messages are coming to them, including hate-based rhetoric designed to look like harmless internet activity.
“It’s not a matter of if they will find hate online – it’s a matter of when,” says Brette. It’s not enough to “trust that your family’s values will protect them. It’s our job to help teens and young adults screen for hateful activity online and seek help when needed.”
The SCREEN Hate campaign offers an online hub and accompanying online campaigns to provide parents and concerned adults with easily accessible resources available in one place.
