How Do We Know If We Have Implicit Biases?
& Why Is It Important to Find Out?
Implicit bias is one of those topics I think some of us — certainly me, to speak personally — may think we understand, but perhaps we could use a deeper view into how it works and how it impacts our behavior and relationships. Given that implicit biases are by definition ones we’re not aware of holding, and that we may feel confident that we are NOT biased, if we do have them, how we can excavate these biases? This week’s guest, Noel Dominguez, will help us understand better what “implicit bias” is; how it forms and functions; why it matters; and what we can do to surface our own stereotypes and attitudes and “debias” ourselves and our communities. Noel is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at Harvard, and the author of a thoughtful essay titled, “Moral Responsibility for Implicit Bias: Examining Our Options”… which will be a chapter in the book Introduction to Implicit Bias: Knowledge, Justice, and the Social Mind.” Noel has taught courses on Free Will and the Philosophy of Race. Noel is also the Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion & Equity Program Manager for the Trustees of Reservations.
