CITY OF NEWBURYPORT
HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Dear Newburyport Downtown Businesses and Residents Only:

The collection and disposal of solid waste has been identified by the federal government as an essential service during the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The all-encompassing efforts to contain and slow the spread of COVID-19 are creating new and extraordinary challenges for us all, and we are committed to continuing to deliver safe and reliable collection and disposal services to you throughout this crisis.

The well-being of our businesses, residents of the community, employees and vendor staff is our highest priority. Toward that end and because we are working to continue this service for the downtown area, we have taken a number of actions that will require you to make some adjustments to your trash and recycling disposal as outlined below:

Most aspects of collection will stay the same- Continue to put out trash and recycling on Thursday evening for Friday morning pick-up. If you haven’t done so already, please label any barrels you use.

• For the health and safety of those in contact with materials that may harbor the virus:

o ,All trash must be bagged and put in barrels at the usual designated sites on the curb.

o Recycling also must be put in barrels (the old-style blue bins are OK).

o NEW: Do NOT put cardboard on the sidewalk. A dumpster for cardboard and other recyclables will be in the Green Street Parking Lot, on Thursday, March 26 after 3 pm until 10 am on Friday morning. This is for recycling material only; cardboard, bottles, jars, cans and paper. If you need to contain recycling that is not in a barrel or is going into the dumpster please use paper bags or cardboard boxes only, NO PLASTIC BAGS.

o NOTE: Trash bags that are not in barrels, cardboard on the sidewalk, and bulk items will be left behind and not picked up and will be your responsibility to remove.

As events unfold across the region, we will continue updating our policies and procedures to reflect expert advice, best practices and guidance from federal, state, and local public health authorities. We remain committed to delivering services to our local businesses and residents, even in the most difficult conditions.

Thank you for your help in adhering to these policies; stay safe and be well.

Sincerely,
Molly M. Ettenborough
